Gramophonics
A collaborative community music project commissioned as part of the Kingswood Symphony
Commissioned by The Wigmore Hall and Stour Valley Arts
GRAMOPHONICS is a collaborative sonic arts and musical composition project that sought to bring together two diverse communities through the creation of soundscapes that originated with recordings made in their respective neighbourhoods. Working with pupils from inner London schools close to The Wigmore Hall, together with and pupils from schools close to Kings Wood near Ashford, Kent, the underlying artistic dialogue was a cross-pollination between the two very different soundscapes of the respective localities.  Hence the resulting sound-world is a hybrid of city and forest sonic material.
The work was presented through the installation of 12 gramophones located at different times in Kings Wood and The Wigmore Hall.  Over 90 minutes of material was produced - the video above gives a snapshot of one section of the piece.
